Flatford - Exploring Constable Country

Venue - Flatford

Cost - £30 (members only)

This year we are gaining extraordinary insights into John Constable’s paintings at the Mansion, but just before The Hay Wain arrives there, we will have an opportunity to explore the beautiful Dedham Vale that so inspired the artist.

After independent travel to Flatford, we will assemble at Bridge Cottage at 10.30am. At 10.45am, 2 boats (16 people) will leave for a 30-minute exploration of the Stour while the rest of the party will be given a short introductory tour of Flatford. At 11.30am the parties will switch activities. At around 12.15pm you are invited to purchase your own lunch at the café (or if preferred you can bring your own picnic). At 1.30pm we will gather in the Granary for a talk from expert National Trust guide Patricia Hodgkins on the background to Constable’s Flatford paintings before returning outside once more to look at the Mill and other buildings in more detail.

The cost for this memorable trip includes the river excursion, the walking tours, the talk and a bonus digital copy of The Lott Families of Flatford (vol.2), a fascinating history of life in Flatford in the 18th and 19th centuries. Numbers are strictly limited to 32, so early booking is recommended.

Parking is 200 yards from Bridge Cottage in the National Trust car park (there is also a separate disabled car park). Capacity is limited and the car parks may fill quickly on busy days. Free for National Trust members, others are £6 per car. Sat Nav: Postcode CO7 6U.

Booking is via the on-line booking link above or by contact@ foim.org.uk. See p27 of our Spring newsletter for payment details, and please add RIVER for reference.
