London trip to Tate Britain for Turner & Constable: Rivals and Originals

Venue - London, Tate Britain

Cost - Friends £55, Guests £70

BOOK ONLINE

There is little doubt that one of the blockbuster exhibitions of the coming year is going to be Tate Britain’s Turner & Constable: Rivals & Originals. They are describing this as “The definitive exhibition of two pivotal British artists in the 250th year of their births” and “a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the careers of the two greatest British landscape painters, seen – as they often were in their own time – side by side.” We are delighted to have secured tickets to the exhibition coupled with an exclusive private lecture from a Tate expert. Our visit will conclude with a very special lunch at the London home of our President, Lady Deben.

Two of Britain’s greatest artists, Constable and Turner were also great rivals. Born just 14 months apart, art critics of the day compared their paintings to a clash of ‘fire and water’, and this landmark exhibition explores their intertwined lives and legacies. “Discover unexpected sides to both artists alongside intimate insights seen through sketchbooks and personal items.” Over 170 paintings and works on paper will be on display including Turner’s momentous 1835 The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, not seen in Britain for over a century, and The White Horse, one of Constable’s greatest artistic achievements.

After independent travel to London, we will assemble at Tate Britain at 10.45am for our lecture at 11am. Following our enjoyment of the Turner and Constable paintings, we will travel independently to the home of Lord and Lady Deben (about a 20-minute walk or a 7-minute taxi ride) for drinks on the terrace (weather permitting) and a sandwich lunch with wine. The full itinerary will be given on booking.

The cost for this memorable trip includes the private lecture, access to the exhibition and the lunch with wine. Payment details are via the on-line booking link above or on page 27 of our Winter newsletter (using the reference TATE), but for any enquiries, please email contact@foim.org.uk. Tate Members are asked to email or telephone Jean Attenborrow (01473 213025) before paying as there may be a price reduction. Numbers are strictly limited, so early booking is highly recommended.
